How to Prepare Your Artwork for Print: A Step-by-Step Guide
Preparing your artwork correctly is the most important step to ensure your printed materials look exactly as you expect. At Graphix Productions, we print your uploaded files directly to your selected product specifications. Following this quick checklist will help you avoid common printing errors and ensure a fast turnaround for your online order.\n\n### 1. Set Your Color Mode to CMYK\nScreens display colors using RGB (Red, Green, Blue), whereas commercial printing presses use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black). Before starting your design, set your color space to CMYK. Converting an RGB file to CMYK right before exporting can cause sudden color shifts, particularly with bright blues, greens, and pinks. For the best accuracy in Singapore, we recommend using the Coated FOGRA39 color profile.\n\n### 2. Add Bleed and Safe Zones\nWhen printed sheets are trimmed to their final size, slight movements in the cutting machine can occur. To prevent raw paper edges or cropped text, always include bleed and safe zones:\n Bleed (2mm to 3mm): Extend your background colors and images at least 2mm or 3mm beyond the final cut line (trim size). This ensures no white borders remain after cutting.\n Safe Zone (3mm): Keep all vital elements, such as text, logos, and contact details, at least 3mm inside the cut line to prevent them from being accidentally trimmed off.\n\n### 3. Check Image Resolution (300 DPI)\nImages saved from the internet are typically 72 DPI (Dots Per Inch), which looks crisp on screens but blurry and pixelated when printed. Ensure all raster images and logos used in your artwork are at least 300 DPI at their actual print size. Avoid stretching small images to fit large layouts, as this reduces their resolution.\n\n### 4. Convert Fonts to Outlines\nIf our printing systems do not have the exact font you used in your design, the text may render incorrectly or shift position. To prevent this, convert all text to outlines (also known as paths or curves) before saving. \n In Adobe Illustrator: Select text and press `Ctrl + Shift + O` (Windows) or `Cmd + Shift + O` (Mac).\n In Adobe InDesign: Select text and press Ctrl + Shift + O or Cmd + Shift + O.\n\n### 5. Flatten Transparencies and Effects\nHeavy drop shadows, transparencies, and complex vector gradients can sometimes render unpredictably on the press. Flatten your vector artwork or rasterize complex effects to avoid unexpected solid blocks of color or missing layers in your final print.\n\n### 6. Export as High-Quality PDF\nOnce your design is complete, export it as a print-ready PDF. We highly recommend using the PDF/X-1a:2001 preset, which automatically flattens transparencies and embeds fonts. Ensure that you check the box to \"Use Document Bleed Settings\" during the export process so your 2mm or 3mm bleed area is included in the final file.\n\nBy following these steps, your files will flow smoothly through our automated pre-press check, allowing us to produce and deliver your high-quality prints without delay.
